Review:
Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats debut album, Meet The Meatbats, is a must-have. This album oozes cool while intertwining the styles of jazz, funk, blues, rock and more. All this while avoiding the pitfalls of pretension that instrumental albums often fall victim to.
What’s immediately clear is how well these four guys, Chad Smith, Jeff Kollman, Ed Roth, and Kevin Chown, play together. The chemistry pulls together the great musicianship and they’re able to create something truly special. It’s such an aural treat to hear so much talent working together with such strong feel for sound and respect for the song.
The funkier pieces include “Need Strange,” “Oh! I Spilled My Beer,” and “Death Match.” On the other end of the balance scale are more melodic pieces like “The Battle For Ventura Blvd.,” “Night Sweats,” “Lola,” and “Into The Floyd.” I have to believe that by intent, the song “Tops Off” sounds like it could be the soundtrack for a Penthouse home video.
With one swing, Meet The Meatbats hit a home run.
