Review:
Light Me Up is a frisky pop-rock debut EP from Gene the Werewolf that intends to arouse it’s listeners. It’s filled with sexual innuendos that turn you on and make you giggle at the same time. With an abundance of animal references, it opens with “Superhero,” an upbeat sounding song about needing to be saved. At first, Gene’s voice almost resembles Paul Stanley of Kiss, but it quickly becomes his own. Nonetheless, the spirit of Kiss seems heavily prevalent throughout all six tracks.
The second song, “Heart Attack,” is high energy and comically describes the possible negative side effects of passionate sex. The third tune is the title track and is probably the closest thing to a ballad you’ll find on the album. It’s laced with more delicious sex talk, especially when Gene proclaims how “life is much better when we’re laying in bed.” In my opinion, it’s the second best song in the collection of six. My personal favorite is “Come On I Gene, in which the band includes a very catchy chorus that just might “make you growl like a tiger.” It also features a mini-rap by MC Lars.
You would think the fifth song, “Make Love,” would be the ballad but it’s more of a jaded tune about love and (you guessed it!!) sex. “I Got the Love” is another upbeat, feel good song that can easily get stuck in your head. It also has a guitar solo you can really sink your teeth into, though I think Gene would prefer you sink your teeth into him.
While the album does sound a tiny bit mainstream, there’s nothing wrong with that. Plus you won’t be able to resist the urge to dance and sing along with Gene and his band.
