The Hunter, released through Reprise Records on September 27, 2011, is the fifth studio album by the American heavy metal band Mastodon. This is the band’s first release under the helm of producer Mike Elizondo.
Listening to this album reminded me of when I was a kid hearing great metal bands for the first time, like Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Deep Purple, and countless others. Mastodon’s music evokes that same type of response.
The band is fearless in their sonic shifts from massive heavy grooves to more progressive tinged metal licks. They’ve even tossed in a trippy song written by drummer Brann Dailor that sounds as if it’s heavily influenced by Pink Floyd.
Mastodon continues to prove they are one of the best metal acts on the scene today, and they’ve gotten their by never really settling into a particular sound or style. The Hunter is their latest testament that they will continue to push musical boundaries.
