Aerosmith is back! The band has returned with their first album of original music in 11 years, titled Music from Another Dimension!
The album kicks off with the heavily Beatles influenced song “LUV XXX.” The band even enlisted Julian Lennon to sing back-up vocals. It’s a solid tune with a great riff that has a Pump and Permanent Vacation vibe to it. However, the chorus is a little flat and holds the song back a bit.
“Oh Yeah,” the second track, is a great Joe Perry rocker. Lauren Alaina provides background vocals, giving the song somewhat of a classic Rolling Stones feel, but it’s all Aerosmith. The guitar tone is amazing. You can really hear the vintage sound pouring out of the the amp.
“Beautiful” is a bit of an oddball featuring a dissonant guitar riff with Steven Tyler rapping the verses, intertwined with a lush chorus. Somehow they make it work, but it sounds like they really had to shoehorn this one to make it fit.
“Out Go the Lights” is one of the strongest tracks on the album. It’s a great funky rock tune featuring back-up singers, horns, and harmonica. The energy on this track is infectious. You can tell the band was having a very good time recording it.
“Legendary Child” was selected as the album’s first single, which some may find odd because it sounds like the roughest vocal performance by Tyler.
For the country ballad “Can’t Stop Loving You,” the band enlisted Carrie Underwood to handle co-lead vocal duties. The song is produced very slickly, especially with how the vocals are mixed. Tyler’s vocal performance on this song vastly overshadows Underwood’s. The song would be much stronger if they brought in someone with a little more soul.
Music from Another Dimension! finds Joe Perry also taking some of the lead vocal duties, as on “Something” and “Freedom Fighter,” a bluesy rocker that also features Johnny Depp on backing vocals.
The album closes with “Another Last Goodbye” which is reminiscent of the band’s early work featuring piano and strings. On this song we hear Tyler at his finest, putting out a dynamic, powerful, and moving vocal performance.
Overall, Aerosmith has put together a solid rock album. It’s great to hear them drawing from their earlier work, while still giving fans something new to hear.
