Extreme performed at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Conn. on Friday, January 16, 2015. The band is touring in support of the 25th anniversary re-release of their multi-platinum selling album “Extreme II: Pornograffitti.”
After a bit of a delay getting started, with the excitable crowd beginning to get restless, the lights dimmed and jumped into the album’s first track, Decadence Dance.” Vocalist Gary Cherone held the mic toward the crowd and invited everyone to sing the first verse. The arena erupted.
Extreme sounded incredible. There are not a lot of rock bands out there that can harmonize as well as Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and bassist Pat Badger. There were too many highlights to count, but some of the memorable performance included “Get the Funk Out”, “More Than Words” and “He-Man Woman Hater”. Bettencourt simply nailed “Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee,” which is still a thrill to watch and hear played live.
The band played these songs like they were fresh and new, not like they were written 25 years ago. The crowd felt it, and sang along to every song when Cherone coaxed them to. Extreme closed the main set with a lively rendition of their hit “Hole Hearted.” They slickly threw in a verse of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, A fitting tribute to one of their influences.
The band really let it fly for the encore. The jumped back on stage with renewed energy, with drummer Kevin Figueiredo laying down a heavy groove, like it was the first song of the night. The blasted through 6 songs spanning their entire career, including “Play With Me” from their first album, “Rest in Peace” from “III Sides to Every Story”, and “Takes Us Alive” from their last album, 2008’s “Saudades de Rock.”
When Extreme reunited in 2006 for some shows in New England, the running theme was “fuck nostalgia.” I think that still holds true, even on this tour. The band still plays like they’re hungry twenty-somethings who want to give everyone an amazing show.
