Creed Opens New Doors at Mohegan Sun

“Are you ready?” The familiar opening riff builds up and then the song explodes. From the starting note, Creed owned the stage tonight and proved that they were there to rock.

Creed is currently in the midst of their 2 Nights Live tour. In select cities, the band performs My Own Prison the first night and Human Clay during the second (both albums played in their entirety), and also be plays select songs from the Weathered and Full Circle albums.

During their one-night stand at the Mohegan Sun Arena, the band brought forth the same kind of high energy performance we saw in 2009. But hearing those Human Clay tracks played together again brought me back to an even earlier time; the excitement and the thrill of seeing Creed play live for the first time in 2002. You could tell by the looks on their faces that they were having a blast playing these tunes again.

Along with the high energy, Creed also brings great musicianship to the stage. Scott Stapp started the set with solid vocals but then kicked it into a higher gear after the first song. Scott Phillips and Brian Marshall provided a strong backbone while Mark Tremonti turned out the screaming guitar parts he’s known for (with the help of touring guitarist Eric Friedman).

It was great to see Creed tear it up on stage again, and judging by the roaring crowd, the fans agree.

Review:

Hurt is set to release their latest album, The Crux, on May 1, 2012 via Carved Records. The album was produced by guitarist Michael Roberts and the band and mixed by John Kurzweg (Creed, Puddle of Mudd, Godsmack).

The writing and recording of the band’s previous album, Goodbye to the Machine, was done during a tight time-frame and with the added burden of having to replace a band member just prior to the start of production. This time around the band had more time to collaborate on the development of the songs for The Crux. “It was really important for us to get this right, so we took our time and put everything we had into it,” J. Loren notes in Hurt’s bio.

The Crux, like Hurt’s previous efforts Vol. 1 and Vol. II, is not simply a collection of individual songs. There are also solid production elements and a congruous stylistic undercurrent that binds the music on the album together as a cohesive work. Rek Mohr explained to Type 3 Media, “…a lot of the frustrations that we had, a lot of the anger comes out very vividly on this record. I would liken it to the Volumes but a whole lot angrier.”

Piano. Guitar. Then vocals, bass and drums. The first track, “So When,” comes alive and reaches for your throat. Then the chorus kicks in with layers upon layers of vocals and lifts you up then crushes you. “You swore that you’d die if you leave me, So why are you still breathing?” This track is a good representation of how the band has amalgamated the tones of their last two albums and added a dose of ire. That’s it, I’m already hooked.

The album continues through ten more tracks of compelling compositions, each with it’s own personality. “Eden” is loaded with jarring key changes and chord progressions, and then transitions into “Links and Waves,” an unwavering expression of bliss. “Sally Slips,” one of my favorite tracks, sashays its way through the verses until it begins a climatic rise into the chorus with the line, “I could neither fuck it or cover it, I’d rather smother it.” Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time I hear it.

“When It’s Cold” is a deeply painful and disturbing song with matricidal undertones and features a killer riff and growling basslines. Every time the track ends I find myself reaching for the replay button. This is followed by “Adonai” which is well positioned to be an epic track from the album and is likely to stir up some lively debates regarding its thought-provoking religious theme.

“Cuffed” follows “Caught In The Rain,” and may be the surprise track of the album with a dynamic sound that’s a bit unlike anything Hurt’s offered previously. The range of emotion put into the vocal performance of this song is unparalleled. Weeping violins, punchy guitars, and where the hell did that fill come from?!?

“How We End Up Alone” has great sound and a relatable theme that makes it a good choice for the album’s first single. It’s more approachable to the masses on radio and gives listeners a suitable first taste of the music on the album. “Numbers,” which was originally released in 2010, has been reworked for the album. The most notable difference is that the mix sounds more lively and crisp. The album closes with the lighter mid-tempo piece, “The Seer.”

Musically, this is the tightest line-up of the band I’ve heard in years. Bassist Mohr and drummer Victor Ribas sound like they’ve been playing together for years, the guitars and other instrumentation have never sounded better, and it’s impossible to adequately put into words the quality of effort that Loren puts into the lyrics and vocals. “These are the finest musicians I’ve ever worked with, and we’ve regained the sense of brotherhood that the band had in the beginning, with everyone united to achieve a common goal,” states Loren. And it shows.

When you listen to many of the bands on today’s Active Rock charts the music sounds like it was pumped out of the same writing and production machine. The problem becomes that it’s difficult to stand out and claim any shred of artistic integrity when you sound like every other mainstream act out there. Hurt rejects such a formulaic approach to creating music and proves it with the tracks they laid down on The Crux. The result is an album you can listen to over and over and take away something new each time.

Megadeth Wakes Up The Crowd in CT

Megadeth is the headlining act on the Gigantour, which includes other the other notable acts Motörhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil. The second stop of the tour brought the band to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut on January 27, 2012.

The band’s set was an awesome mix of songs from their extensive catalog, including “Wake Up Dead” from 1986′s Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?, “Hangar 18″ from 1990′s Rust in Peace, and “Symphony of Destruction” from 1992′s Countdown to Extinction. They also played three songs (in a row) from the their latest release TH1RT3EN; “Public Enemy No. 1,” “Whose Life (Is It Anyways?),” and “Guns, Drugs & Money.”

Megadeth owns any venue they play. Not only do they blow the roof off with their powerful sound, but they are a commanding presence on the stage… a photographer’s dream. Nothing beats going out to see a great band, especially one that shows their appreciation to fans by putting on a tremendous performance.

Motörhead Marches Off to Mohegan Sun in CT

Motörhead is making their return to the U.S. on the multi-bill festival, Gigantour, with Megadeth, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil. The second stop of the tour brought the band to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut on January 27, 2012.

The crowd was already amped up when Motörhead took the stage, but when the band started playing their first few chords, the energy of the arena went through the roof. The band played several of their classics including “Bomber,” “Ace of Spades,” and “Overkill” as well as newer songs like “I Know How to Die” from the 2010 release The Wörld Is Yours.

The performance lived up to, or exceeded everyone’s expectations, loud and raucous. And from my perspective, there’s nothing cooler than being in the photo pit while Lemmy is belting out tunes and wailing away on his Rickenbacker bass. Motörhead killed it.

Halestorm Rocks The Mohegan Sun Wolf Den

Halestorm performed a free show at the Mohegan Sun Wolf Den on December 30, 2011.

As early as two hours prior to showtime, fans were lined up around the venue waiting to get inside. Halestorm played many fan favorites like “It’s Not You” and “I Get Off”, as well as three new songs, “Love Bites (So Do I),” “American Boys,” and “Freak Like Me,” which will be featured on their forthcoming album.

Corey Taylor Spits Out Electrifying Performance in Rhode Island

“Chicken-Cow-Cow.” Not exactly the intro music one might expect for a rock star with the body of work Corey Taylor has amassed over the past 12+ years, but then, nothing about this appearance was entirely expected.

Taylor began the performance by setting some ground rules then reading excerpts from his book, Seven Deadly Sins. He prefaced the reading by saying “This is #50 on the Christian reading list … that means two fucking things by the way, one, they’re buying it in bulk to burn, or two, I am warping the shit out of the Christian youth of today.”

Taylor also took some time to tell stories and answer questions from the audience. Many of the stories, such as getting electrocuted by Daniel Tosh and the origins of “Chicken-Cow-Cow” contained a lot of humorous elements. Other stories offered insight into Taylor’s life as a musician, like the creepy doctor’s office in Indianapolis that provided the best remedy for sore vocal chords and his remarks about what life is like now that he’s been sober for a year and a half; “When I thought I was singing great wasted, turns out I was not.”

For the second half of the appearance Taylor whipped out his acoustic guitar and played songs to the delight of the crowd. The set included the Stone Sour favorites “Zzyzx Rd.” and “Through the Glass,” as well as songs from the Slipknot catalog like “Spit It Out,” “Psychosocial,” and “Snuff.”

Taylor also played a good number of cover tunes, including Elvis’ “Burning Love,” Alice In Chains’ “Down in a Hole,” U2′s “With Or Without You,” and the Ramones’ “Outsider.” Despite being a bit under the weather, Taylor sounded great. It was impressive to hear how he made the songs his own by playing them his way and not trying to over-emulate the bands.

The set closed with a rowdy rendition of “X-M@$,” the anti-holiday track Taylor released last year. It’s no wonder why he makes such a great front-man, because whether he’s singing, speaking, and playing guitar (or even cheap Casio keyboards), Corey Taylor is lively, animated, and engaging. He doesn’t have to work to connect to the crowd; he just does it instinctively.

Taylor’s closing remark from the Q&A session sums up this evening pretty well, “As long as your passionate about something, fucking do it. You don’t have to define your life by it, but at least try for it.”
