Review:

Black Label Society is back with their latest release, The Song Remains Not The Same. The album opens with four acoustic/unplugged tracks from their 2010 album, Order of the Black. The first track is a stripped down acoustic version of “Overlord (Acoustic).” The song is produced in a way that makes the vocals in the chorus jump out and sound huge and powerful. A great start.

The tone “Parade Of The Dead (Unplugged),” “Riders Of The Damned (Unplugged),” and “Darkest Days (Unplugged)” is set by the moody piano and string arrangements. “Darkest Days (Unplugged)” is possibly the best recording on the album. The vocals during the verses are crisp and sans too much effects or doubling.

The next four tracks are BLS covers of various tunes from the 1960′s and 70′s. The first is a rendition of “Junior’s Eyes” from the Black Sabbath’s 1978 album titled Never Say Die!. BLS next tackles “Helpless,” a song written by Neil Young and recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young on their 1970 album Déjà Vu. I never thought I’d say this about a BLS recording, but it’s a very touching version of the song. They follow it up with Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” from the 1970 album of the same name. The recording features another great vocal performance, but layering is distracting in a couple spots.

The next cover is a version of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home,” originally from their the self-titled album released in 1969. It’s a great recording, especially because of Zakk Wylde’s blazing guitar-work at the end of the song. The album closes with another recording of “Darkest Days” featuring John Rich on vocals, and an instrumental version of “The First Noel,” where Wylde again gets to show off his great skill as a guitarist.

This is a great album for any Black Label Society fan.

ROCK ON THE RANGE is celebrating its Fifth Anniversary! America’s premier destination rock festival – May 21-22 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio – will feature a spectacular lineup of rock heavyweights including A Perfect Circle (first performance of 2011), Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Korn, Stone Sour and Staind (first performance in two years). The unforgettable weekend will also be highlighted by performances from Danzig, Hollywood Undead, Bullet For My Valentine, Black Label Society and Alter Bridge. In addition, Juliya of Fuse TV will return as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event.

“Three years ago my other band Ashes Divide was fortunate enough to play Rock On The Range as a support act; to return to the same festival and headline this year with A Perfect Circle is truly an honor,” says Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle.

“We are honored that Rock On The Range has asked us be one of the headliners,” says M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold. “Not only is it an amazing show to be apart of, but it holds a deep spot in our hearts. Rock On The Range was the last American show we played with our best friend and drummer, The Rev. We are looking forward to continuing his legacy of rock n roll insanity that night! See you all there.”

The ROCK ON THE RANGE celebration will start early on Friday night, May 20 with the nation’s biggest pre-festival Anniversary Party at the venue, featuring performances from two of the world’s craziest throwback rock artists – Steel Panther and Lez Zeppelin. Best of all, your ticket to the Anniversary Party will be absolutely FREE with every ROCK ON THE RANGE weekend ticket purchase!

A special ROCK ON THE RANGE ticket pre-sale will take place from Wednesday, February 9 at 10:00 AM (ET) through Friday, February 11 at 10:00 PM (ET). For details on pre-sale, go to: www.facebook.com/rockontherange. Tickets go on sale to the general public Saturday, February 12 at 10:00 AM (ET). Two day weekend festival passes start at just $99.50 plus service and transaction fees. Layaway ticket purchase options are also still available for a limited time.

Stay tuned to www.RockOnTheRange.com, www.facebook.com/rockontherange and www.twitter.com/rockontherange for the most upto-date ROCK ON THE RANGE information.

Presented by Right Arm Entertainment, AEG Live and Crew Stadium, ROCK ON THE RANGE is a two-day, multi-stage music and lifestyle event featuring a potent line-up of bands on three stages. The nationally renowned festival centrally located in the heart of the country has annually drawn crowds in excess of 30,000 per day since its inception in 2007.

Black Label Society is known as a hard working, hard playing and hard drinking band with an uncompromising and unapologetic sound. Zakk Wylde and his “Doom Crew” have been traveling around the world bringing a sonic assault to audiences and leaving carnage in their wake for over a dozen years. Captivating fans with electric live shows, Black Label Society are a band of skilled musicians that brings showmanship and the element of danger back into rock that have been absent for so long.

In August of 2010, Black Label Society released their 8th studio album, entitled Order Of the Black, that brought a welcome sound that reflects the earlier works of Sonic Brew and Stronger then Death. Order of the Black also marks Black Label Society’s 5th consecutive top 50 chart release and has been praised by critics and fans alike.

While Nick the “Evil Twin” Catanese’s guitar playing may be overshadowed by Zakk Wylde, Catanese can hold his own and is a rhythm and melodic force to be reckoned with. Having found Wylde’s email address in a magazine, Catanese asked Wylde if he was in need of a second guitar player, and the rest is history. While on tour in support of Order Of the Black , Type 3 Media contributor Brandon Marshall had a chance to speak with Catanese.

Type 3 Media: What do you enjoy most about being a professional musician?

Nick Catanese: Honestly, in what other job do you get to play music with your best friends, see the world, and have fun every night? It’s the best job that I know.

T3M: What are some of your favorite rhythms on Order Of the Black?

NC: My favorite songs to play live are “Parade of the Dead” and ”Southern Dissolution”, because it has such a grinding riff, but there is something cool with all of them.

T3M: How have the new songs been going over live?

NC: Great! People are singing them. “Overlord” goes over really well.

T3M: I can see that, with such a great chorus and the hooks that it has; a whole arena singing along to “Overlord.”

NC: Oh, without a doubt. It just has that groove and that upbeat part to the solo. It just gets the crowd bumping along.

T3M: Order of the Black brought in a new drummer. What did Will bring that Craig did not, and does recording with a new member mess with the chemistry?

NC: No, I mean Craig was an intricate part, and he was with us for eight years. He [Craig] has a son and wanted to be at home with his family. So, we got Will [Hunt]. He plays drums with Tommy Lee. Will actually sat in with Mötley Crüe for four shows. He has played with Evanescence, Stuck Mojo, and Static-X. He is such a high-energy drummer, and he puts on a show killing the drums. He definitely brought some energy. We are all just having a blast, laughing and joking, and people can see that.

T3M: Why was there a four-year gap between Shot to Hell and Order of the Black?

NC: We wanted to take some time. We were touring non-stop for a long time. Things came down with Zakk’s health, but everything is OK now, and I think it [Order of the Black] came out at the right time. Everyone is happy and healthy; the album is doing well, so why ask why?

T3M: It seems before every album release, you and Zakk do a small acoustic radio tour. Is that something you enjoy?

NC: Yeah, but it’s like we always say, “You have the CD, and that’s why a whole CD is made, to play it.” Like “Parade of the Dead” for example, you have it mastered on a CD, but you want an acoustic version of it. Like let’s hear the real version. Ya know what I mean? It’s not like we are coming in and playing a landmark thing like “Dream On”. We have seen “Dream On” live, and heard it on the radio, and now we are going to hear Steven Tyler play it acoustically. It’s a new record, and people want to hear the record. But, there are times that it is a radio contest, where people come in and we make it a personal experience, but its fun; it’s always fun to play no matter what.

T3M: Any filming or recording on this tour for a potential CD or DVD?

NC: There hasn’t been yet, and I don’t really know of any talk about it. I’m sure there will be though. We need to get something with J.D. and Will. Boozed, Broozed & Broken- Boned had Robert Trujillo, Doom Troopin’ had James [LoMenzo], so we need to get J.D. and Will in there.

T3M: With Zakk not drinking anymore, is their less insanity on the road, or has this brought in a whole new era of shenanigans?

NC: (Laughs) Obviously, there is a difference, but Zakk is Zakk. None of that was an act. He is funny as hell, and I have been with him for fourteen years. So, we have seen the best and worst of each other, and I wouldn’t change anything. There is always funny stuff happening, on and offstage, cracking each other up and while doing the meet and greets. We dig hanging out with each other. Bands that ride on their own separate buses, with each member, it’s like, dude you’re supposed to be a band. I love hanging out with J.D., Will, and Zakk. At the end of the night, J.D. will come over and I will give him a hug, and it’s hockey time. When everyone is asleep on the bus, me and J.D. are playing Xbox hockey. We play NHL 11 for hours, and that’s our serenity.

T3M: Black Label Society has some dates in the UK this February. Will you be adding more and playing a full European tour?

NC: Yeah, we are done in the US on November 21st and get home to have Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s at home. Then we start back up in February and tour the UK. I’m sure the dates will be released up on the site, once we get it all together.

T3M: Our European friends will just have to keep checking to www.blacklabelsociety.com then.

NC: Exactly. And for the record, people keep asking me, “Dude, when are you coming to Brazil?” or “Why don’t you guys come to…”, and I’m like, I only play guitar, I don’t book the band. Trust me, I wish we could go everywhere, but I go where the booking agent sends me. But, I hope we can go everywhere. That’s one of the great things about being where we are, playing music and seeing the world.

T3M: I’m guessing that you are a Steelers’ fan and that Zakk and J.D. are Giant’s fans. Any rivalry between you guys?

NC: Well actually, I love hockey.

T3M: So you must be a Penguin.

NC: Yeah. Well of course, I’m from Pittsburgh, but I love hockey. I love the Washington Capitals, Vancouver, and the NY Rangers. The Rangers have a great team this year. I just love watching hockey. In between tours, me and J.D. started playing inline hockey. It makes you respect what they do. The endurance that hockey players have… I went out and played one game, and I was seeing white. Plus, I’m playing against 18 to 22 year-old kids, and I’m 39. I should have Moses on my jersey (laughs), but it’s killer. Playing a sport that you dig gives you a lot of respect for it.

T3M: I throw on my skates a few times every winter, and twenty minutes is enough for me (laughs).

NC: Ohh, without a doubt. Just even standing on skates, you are exerting energy. But I love hockey, NHRA and NASCAR.

T3M: What is so appealing about the motorcycle club culture, and why has Black Label Society adopted the imagery?

NC: That’s a Zakk question. It wasn’t a rip off. Zakk reads a lot of books, and it’s something that interests him, ya know? He was reading Sonny Barger’s book and came up with that idea. Sometimes it puts you in a bad spot with people who don’t agree with it, but it was never out of any disrespect. We are friends with the Hells Angels, but you gotta watch out. I’ll warn fans and say don’t ride your motorcycle with it on, and to just be careful. Even though it doesn’t say MC, that’s what they live for, and if some bikers see something out of disrespect, it could be bad. Now we are going to start seeing the Order of the Black cross patch, that is a bit different.

T3M: I have seen Hells Angels working security at the shows, but, on the other hand, there has been trouble in Europe.

NC: We actually had to cancel a gig in Manchester UK because of it.

T3M: Has there been an understanding or an alliance with…

NC: No no, just that one incident. I mean it’s a vest. We are a band, and, over in England, they were full out threatening. People could have gotten hurt. We don’t want anything to happen to our fans. If we put ourselves into a dumb situation, whatever, but we don’t want anything to happen to our fans, because they were just wearing a shirt. We have to live with that. We don’t want to put anybody in danger, as far as wearing something that is going to make somebody mad or hurt them. This is about music.

T3M: Especially when it’s just a misunderstanding like that.

NC: Yeah. I mean we never would do anything out of disrespect or anything like that. Some people are like “Ohh they’re just wanna be bikers” and stuff like that. It’s like, no, we’re not. I don’t even own a bike, and I’m not saying I want to own a bike. I play guitar. It’s like saying Gene Simmons wants to be a bat (laughs), and that he actually wants to fly around, and Ace Frehley freely wants to… well, maybe Ace Frehley did want to be a spaceman, but it’s an image. Anytime you read like www.blabbermouth.net, or whatever, you see that wannabe biker bullshit. It’s like nobody in this band wants to be a biker. It’s an image that came up, and you can’t say that it’s not working. Any concert that you go to, you see Black Label merch. It looks cool, and, for people that wear it, it’s an instant conversation starter. I have seen people that don’t know each other from Adam have a Black Label shirt on, they are friends in 10 minutes. That’s the power of music, but people take it so seriously. It’s music, it’s not rocket science, and that’s it. There is no reason for people to get into fights about it. There is no reason for people to say they want to be this or that. It’s a band, and if you don’t dig the music, that’s one thing, but come on. Like everyone in KISS wanted to be what they were on stage, and Paul Stanley walked around like that all the time. It’s art, it’s music, and it’s a show. It’s what people want to see. Just come and have fun, and don’t make drama of it.

T3M: That’s the whole point of going to a show, leave all the bullshit aside.

NC: Yeah. And the big thing too is, say you and I went to go and see KISS. I would say “Hey man, let’s go see KISS”, and see is the underlined word. Not “Hey man, let’s go hear KISS”. If you want to hear KISS, put on your iPod. When you see a show, you don’t want to see guys that look like they got off a shift at the Sunoco, with no visuals. People want to be visually stimulated. You want people to walk away saying “Man, I’ve never seen anything like that”. Now we have this video screen that plays videos behind us. For example, KISS could go onstage without the boots and all that stuff, but when that curtain drops and Gene comes out in his destroyer outfit, I get goose bumps. If I walk down the street into a local bar and the band had a kick ass image or whatever, and I walk out thinking that took some thought, then you know they are in it for more than just being in a band and getting girls…blah, blah, blah.

T3M: It’s a certain respect for the audience too.

NC: Without a doubt. People are starved for entertainment. Look at some of the shows that are on TV. I mean traffic jams will be backed up for miles, because some guy is changing his tire. People will stare, because some guy is changing his lug nuts. It’s like, you have never seen this before? People want entertainment. People want to see something different. When you give them that, visually and sonically, that’s where you win.

T3M: You were with Washburn guitars for years, and now you are endorsed with PRS guitars; do you have a signature model out yet?

NC: Yeah, about a year now. It’s out now and it plays great! The model you buy is the one that I have. It’s an SE model. I wanted my signature guitar to be something that I play, and also something affordable. The economy sucks, and I wanted something that people can buy that I use live. I have some amazing PRS’s, and that thing smokes ‘em. It has the EMGs at 185 and jumbo frets. It has that Les Paul feel. It’s heavy and has great harmonics.

T3M: What’s going on with Speed X?

NC: It’s really fun to play with the guys and throw down, but it’s a humbling experience. I would never say that I took Black Label Society for granted, but when you are in something that is a machine that big for 14 years, when you go out and play with other people, it’s not home anymore. I’m not looking over at Zakk, J.D., and Will, it’s like, OK, this is your thing now, and it’s a lot more of a worry. It comes back to the economy. Zakk wanted Speed X to open this tour, but it came down to we couldn’t find a record label, or whatever. There is always going to be time, but, right now, my focus is on BLS and finishing this tour, and what we have for next year. We will see what happens with that. You can follow us at twitter.com/EvilTwinBLS.

T3M: Any last words?

NC: I want to thank everyone who has been with us this long, and thank you for the support for BLS. Every band says that they have the best fans in the world. I have never seen so many people come in with BLS tattoos and be so devoted to this band. I got a place in Myrtle Beach. This sergeant came back, and he was home a week from Pakistan. He had a plaque that was made for me that said “Strength, Determination, Merciless Forever”; it was our motto and the Marine’s. I was like, what do you say to that? Our fans are just the best. We feed off of our fans as much as they feed off of us. When we get a crowd going, you’re going to get a slamming show. The fans make us breathe.

(New York, NY) – Black Label Society has partnered with VEVO for the world premiere of BLS’ hysterical new video “Overlord.” As of today, Monday, November 1st. The video, directed by Master Cylinder, finds guitar legend Zakk Wylde and his Black Label Society in a satire of 70’s Kung Fu movies. Wylde is featured as the Bruce Lee-type action hero (yellow jumpsuit and all) in hot pursuit of the Overlord… in this case an old lady who holds the key to a very special prize. “Overlord” will be the next single from Black Label Society’s latest album ORDER OF THE BLACK; it follows the breakthrough Top 20 rock radio track, “Parade Of The Dead.”

In other Black Label Society news, the first-ever BLS Christmas tune, “The First Noel” is available now on iTunes. The track is a beautiful instrumental which highlights Wylde’s prowess on the acoustic guitar. Black Label Society’s proceeds from sales of the single will be donated to The Zakk and Barbaranne Wylde Foundation at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, a charity The Wyldes have long supported. Click here to purchase the track.

Black Label Society’s first new album in four years, ORDER OF THE BLACK, was released via Entertainment One in North America in August, 2010 and debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart. Black Label Society is currently headlining The Black Label Berzerkus, Zakk Wylde’s own North American package tour featuring Black Label Society, Children Of Bodom, Clutch and 2Cents (please see below for tour dates).

(New York, NY) – KORN’s boycott of BP has started a ground swell of like-minded musicians intent on making a statement against the devastation in The Gulf caused by BP’s record setting oil spill. The following top touring artists have joined the cause and have committed to avoid the use of fuel sold by BP or its affiliates on their upcoming tours for 2010: Disturbed, Lady Gaga, Rise Against, Godsmack, Backstreet Boys, Rock Star Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, Slightly Stoopid, Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Black Label Society with Zakk Wylde, Anthrax, Creed, Filter, Hellyeah and Flogging Molly.

“This is the worst thing that has ever happened to the environment in U.S. history. From everything we’re hearing about now, it’s become clear that BP cut corners to put profit ahead of safety. The message we are sending should tell all the oil companies to spend the money and take the necessary precautions to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” said Jonathon Davis of KORN. “I’m really proud that this many artists have already come on board, and I hope more will join soon.”

First estimates show close to 100 vehicles, trucks and buses from the committed artists will be involved in the boycott this summer. The number is continuously growing, resulting in tours all across North America refusing to fill up with BP products. More touring artists and people throughout the continent are uniting in boycotts against BP as a result of the catastrophic oil spill.

Some summer festival tours like The Rock Star Energy Drink Mayhem Festival are already known for using biofuels. However, the entire festival, comprised of twelve bands, will promise to not purchase their biofuels from BP or any of their affiliates. Tour creator Kevin Lyman agrees, stating “We have so many friends that are now affected by this spill that unless BP spends whatever is needed their livelihoods are lost forever. To that end we are encouraging everyone we deal with to find alternative ways to get down the road this summer.”

(New York, NY) – Berserkers of the universe, the wait will soon come to an end: the new BLS opus will drop in less than four months now. Black Label Society’s brand new album is officially confirmed for an August 10th North American release date. ORDER OF THE BLACK will feature Black Label at its best with frontman/lead axeman Zakk Wylde’s signature guitar virtuosity and howling vocals, as well as a propulsive rhythm section, courtesy of bassist J.D. Deservio and drummer Will Hunt, along with a few surprises. Wylde commented in jest, “The Doom Crew and I have been holed up in the Black Label Bunker for the last few months laying down some of the heaviest, sexiest tracks imaginable. We can’t wait for Berserkers worldwide to hear the symphonic masterpiece that is the new BLS record!” ORDER OF THE BLACK will be released in North America via E1 Music.

In other news, Black Label Society has just been confirmed to headline the second stage of 2010’s Ozzfest. This marks the band’s sixth appearance on the explosive hard rock package tour. Please see below for tour dates. Following Ozzfest, BLS will head out on its own worldwide headlining tour in support of ORDER OF THE BLACK through 2011.

Zakk Wylde and his Black Label Society have become a worldwide phenomenon with die-hard fans all across the globe (affectionately referred to as “Berserkers”) sporting signature BLS gear – leather vests, t-shirts, denim vests with patches, bandanas, etc. Wylde’s international presence is at an all time high having recently returned from several hugely successful press junkets in China, Japan and Singapore. Sponsored by Gibson and Epiphone (makers of Wylde’s signature guitars), these trips saw Wylde completing interviews with high-profile media outlets (print and television), as well as signing thousands of autographs at packed in-store events throughout Asia.

In the two decades since Ozzy Osbourne hired him away from his job at a New Jersey gas station, Zakk Wylde has established himself as a guitar icon known and revered the world over. Writing and recording with Osbourne led to multi-platinum success, inspiring him to create the now legendary Black Label Society in 1998. In the decade plus since, BLS has turned the notion of what a rock band should be upside down by inspiring legions of fans (known as Berserkers) all over the world to follow the mantra: Strength, Determination, Merciless, Forever (SDMF for short). Wylde and his Berserkers have established a heavy metal institution true to the vision of uncompromising, unfiltered and unrestrained rock n’ roll.
