Review:
The new EP from Deer Tick, Tim, is out on February 28, 2012, through Partisan Records. The tracks were recorded during the Divine Providence sessions, the band’s latest full-length. Included on the EP are four unreleased songs as well as an acoustic version of the single, “Main Street.”

The release begins with the rocker “Born at Zero” then slides in to the mid-tempo six-minute epic of “Walls.” “Virginia Gal” has a great blues-infused southern-rock vibe, while the dirge-like “She’s Not Spanish” utilizes strings and organ to amplify it’s character. The finishing touch, the spark that lights the fire, singer John McCauley’s gravelly vocals are overlaid on top of it all.

It’s hard to imagine that the recordings on the Tim EP are the songs not selected for the band’s last full-length. They’re just too good. Deer Tick’s leftovers are better than some bands’ main courses.

Deer Tick Preps Tim EP for Feb 28th Release

Partisan Records is excited to release Tim, the new EP from Deer Tick on February 28, 2012. Taken from the same sessions that produced the band’s highly acclaimed latest full-length, Divine Providence, Tim comprises four unreleased songs as well as an acoustic version of the single, “Main Street.” (This version is the first time McCauley ever played the song. He had finished writing it just minutes before). Tim will be released digitally only at first, and then will be available on 10″ vinyl during the band’s spring tour. It will be streaming all of this week at rdio.com.

Tim and Divine Providence were produced by the band, along with Adam Landry and Justin Collins.

Deer Tick is gearing up for the Christmas holiday by releasing a new EP, titled Holy Shit, It’s Christmas! The EP features the song “Christmas All Summer Long”, sang by John McCauley and the dirge-y “Holy Shit, It’s Christmas!” sang by Ian O’Neil.

Deer Tick Auction Bus To Benefit Pakistan Flood Victims

Providence, RI rock band Deer Tick has announced that it will auction off the tour bus it used on all of its 2009 US tours, nicknamed “The Flagship” (from the band’s 2009 album Born on Flag Day). A generous portion of proceeds will go to benefit Pakistan flood victims through a partnership with Oxfam America.

“The situation over there is so critical, but it seems that very few people are aware of it,” said Deer Tick frontman John McCauley. “Maybe it’s the stigma with that part of the world, I’m not sure. Either way, we feel really strongly that people should be more aware of the situation and hopefully we can help with that.”

Deer Tick Network TV Debut Tonight On Letterman

Deer Tick will make its network television debut tonight (Weds. June 16) on Late Night with David Letterman. Its third album, The Black Dirt Sessions, was just released last Tuesday and reached the #1 sales ranking on Amazon.

About The Black Dirt Sessions

Recorded late last year at Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York, The Black Dirt Sessions is a deeply personal record from Deer Tick and most especially from lead vocalist and songwriter John McCauley. It is the sound of a band coming into its own, finding its voice and pouring its collective heart out. The comparisons that have often been thrust upon McCauley by the press seem to fall away as his own voice comes through more clearly. On songs like “Goodbye, Dear Friend” and “Christ Jesus” which find McCauley alone at the piano, about as naked as you can possibly get on record. The Black Dirt version of “Christ Jesus,” which also appeared on War Elephant, manages to be even more devastating than the original.

Clearly, the band is exploring some darker material here (like death, mortality, the existence of God) than they’ve touched on in the past, and it suits them. Even as the Deer Tick live show has become legendary for its raucous, spontaneous moments, this record serves as proof of the band’s incredible musicianship, cohesive nature and most importantly gives us a chance to witness McCauley becoming a fully formed, mature songwriter right in front of our eyes (or ears).

New Deer Tick Album Due June 2010

The band also experienced a recent line-up change, with the departure of Andy Tobiassen and new member, guitarist Ian O’Neil who left his previous band Titus Andronicus to join Deer Tick full time.

Deer Tick had an incredible 2009. Early in the year the band had the unlikely support of NBC Nightly News’ Brian Williams, who has become one of the leading champions of Deer Tick via his BriTunes music site, alongside critics like David Fricke and Greil Marcus. The band was praised in just about every major music publication, with Rolling Stone going so far as to name them “the country-rock breakthrough of the year.” In their hometown of Providence, RI the band has gone beyond hometown hero status to hometown obesssion. Deer Tick also became a steady favorite for many of our men and women in uniform, performing for Pentagon TV several times. Last Halloween, the band played an entire set of Sex Pistols songs in costume, flawlessly without a single rehearsal. The band played at festivals like Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, Joshua Tree Music Fest, Monolith, Philadelphia Folk Festival, played Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and toured with Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Jason Isbell, The Felice Brothers. A documentary film about the band, City of Sin, was also completed last year and should see the light of day in 2010.

Deer Tick Extends Spring Tour

After finishing a US run with Neko Case late last year, Deer Tick completed a three week European tour – upon their return to the US on Dec. 13 the band entered the studio to put the finishing touches on its as-yet-untitled third album, which will be released in the first half of this year. The band’s first big show of 2010 will be in Los Angeles, as part of the First Fridays series at the Natural History Museum, then in April and May they’ll head out with Those Darlins, Holy Sons and Dr. Dog where they’ll hit almost every major tour market in the country, including a stop at Coachella. The More Fuel For the Fire EP, which was previously an iTunes exclusive, is now available via all digital services.

About the new EP:

As the title would suggest, Deer Tick’s More Fuel for the Fire EP tops off an explosive 2009 for the band that released Rolling Stone’s “country-rock breakthrough of the year” nine months earlier. Taken mostly from a month-long recording session in upstate New York nicknamed “The Black Dirt Sessions”, More Fuel for the Fire features three new studio tracks as well as a live version of “Straight Into A Storm” (from Born on Flag Day) recorded in Charlotte, NC at the Visulite Theatre.
