Dropkick Murphys Ship Down To The Whiskey Republic

Dropkick Murphys‘ Ken Casey and a group of his friends, including Brian O’Donnell, opened The Whiskey Republic in grand fashion on March 14th. The Whiskey Republic is a pub-style restaurant and sports bar located on the Providence, RI waterfront. To celebrate both the opening of venue and the release of Dropkick Murphys’ latest CD Going Out In Style, a limited number of free tickets were made available to fans for this private Dropkick Murphys show.

The venue looked great. Designed by O’Donnell’s wife, Taniya Nayak, the room was very open and inviting. When the doors open a 6 o’clock the venue quickly filled with eager fans and guests. I asked the PR rep about the rules for shooting the event, and after consulting with the band he told me they said “let them loose.” Those are some of the sweetest words a music photographer gets to hear.

The stage setup in The Whiskey Republic is rather modest, and it wasn’t clear how they would all fit onstage. But at around 7:30 the entire band squeezed into place and treated the crowd to a rousing eight song set. The sound and lighting were excellent. Casey joked that the one thing he would change about the venue would be to make the stage larger and higher.

The people in the crowd had a blast. After the set some Irish drum-corps (The Rhode Island Professional Firefighters Pipes & Drums) were making there way through the crowd. They even let some in the crowd bang the drums. This wasn’t just a show, it was an event, a party, and a great time for everyone privileged enough to be there. I’m looking forward to my next visit to The Whiskey Republic, and the next Dropkick Murphys show.

Dropkick Murphys Debut At No. 6

Dropkick Murphys’ critically acclaimed new CD Going Out In Style (Born & Bred Records/ILG) debuts at #6 on the Billboard Top 200, marking the groups highest chart debut to date. The album is receiving overwhelming praise, with USA Today declaring it “funny, moving, inspiring and, above all, entertaining,” while the New York Times applauds its “gruff punk with some rowdy Irish roots and offer no mercy for posers or phonies.”

The band’s video for “Memorial Day,” the first radio single from seventh full-length studio album, will debut on MTV2 and mtvU next Thursday, March 17 in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. With band performance footage interspersed throughout, the “Memorial Day” video follows dual story lines. In one, Dropkick’s Ken Casey and Al Barr appear as motivational speakers at a leadership conference, running their corporate audience through familiar team-building exercises. The other flashes back to follow a delinquent youth from elementary school exploits to teenage run-ins with the law.

Are The Dropkick Murphys Going Out In Style?

The Dropkick Murphys are a blue collar, hardworking band that has set out and achieved everything on their own terms, with no compromise, while busting through every brick wall in front of them. With a blend of unique Irish American Celtic Punk fusion, the Dropkick Murphys, came from the late 1990’s Hardcore scene, out of the bars in Boston, to achieve world wide success, from writing anthems for the Boston Red Sox to Australian football, with a grueling tour schedule and explosive live shows in-between. While kicking off the first night of their tour in Buffalo NY, in support of the bands seventh studio album, entitled Going Out in Style, I had a chance to speak with James Lynch (Guitar/Vocals).

Type 3 Media: Congratulations on the release of Going Out in Style that will be released on March 1st (US). Why was there a four-year gap between The Meanest of Times and Going Out of Style? Was there added pressure due to the success of the The Meanest of Times?

James Lynch: It wasn’t a conscious thing. We wrote the record, and then we just started touring. Once you get out there [on tour], it’s easy to forget about everything else. We just kept going and going. We stopped and took some much-needed time to rest. We waited for the right time to do it so there was no pressure on us. It worked out for the best. When it was time go start working, we got in [the studio] and we did. Everything came out great!

Type 3 Media: With an album title like Going Out in Style, it has many fans worried. Is this a reference to the last Dropkick album?

JL: No, it is not. We discussed that and knew it was going to be a problem. People would think that, but it’s a reference to one of the songs.

Type 3 Media: Going Out in Style has a concept to it; can you explain?

JL: It’s based around a fictional character that we and our friend Michael Patrick McDonald created. It’s kind of a composite of my grandfather and his grandfather and a bunch of old family stories. We always put pieces of our lives in songs, and this seemed like a good way to tell about stories of struggles from when you move, to when you are growing up to the end of your life.

Type 3 Media: That’s a cool tribute.

JL: Yeah, it turned out really well.

Type 3 Media: What was it like working with Bruce Springsteen on the cover of “Peg o’ My Heart”? How did that collaboration come together, and did everyone record collectively?

JL: Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get into the studio together; we were in Australia by the time we heard back from him. We met him [Springsteen] a few years ago in New York City, at the Roseland, and it has always been a dream to work with him. So, we dared to ask for this album, and he got right back to us. Unfortunately, we were out of the country, and we had to send him the tapes. He recorded on his own. He was totally professional, and what a great guy to take some time out of his schedule to get that done for us. Hopefully, in the future, we will get in the room together and do something a little more hands on.

Type 3 Media: Didn’t you guys jam with him [Springsteen] at the Boston Garden a few years ago?

JL: A bunch of the guys in the band did. I was actually at my sister’s rehearsal dinner for her wedding. So, I can never pretend to be upset because I missed it. Why wouldn’t I want to support my sister?

Type 3 Media: Hopefully, the opportunity will come up again.

JL: Yeah, you can say that about a lot of things, but I’m not sure that’s one of them. (laughs)

Type 3 Media: This was the fist time The Dropkicks worked with producer Ted Hutt. Did he push you musically in ways that you had never been challenged before?

JL: Me personally, very much so. This is the first record we did since Marc [Orrell] left the band and it was on Tim [Brennan] and me to get all the guitar stuff done. I have always considered myself a rhythm guitar player. Usually, we finish the drum tracks in the first week, but Ted had me working. I appreciate it very much. I came out a better guitar player, and I’m really proud of what we done.

Type 3 Media: What are some of your favorite guitar parts from Going Out in Style?

JL: I’m excited about the whole album; I can’t pick out anything specifically. I’m proud of the whole thing beginning to end.

Type 3 Media: Musically, the Dropkicks have progressed leaps and bounds from earlier albums. Is this due to line-up changes or maturing as musicians?

JL: A lot of changes haven’t hurt anything. Every member of this band is incredibly talented and able to pick up this and pick up that. The sound is, I guess what you could say, it’s always what we wanted, but just didn’t have the means to create.

Type 3 Media: Every St. Patty’s day, you guys play a special show in Boston. What can the New England crowd expect this year? Any secret shows?

JL: This year we are going to take it to every different size venue we can. We are doing three shows at the House of Blues, and then we are doing an arena show [Tsongas Arena in Lowell, MA]. Then, we are doing a show at the Paradise.

Type 3 Media: Early on during the Dropkicks formative years, shows would get out of hand with different gangs and Hardcore crews, but now Dropkicks have no specific demographic. Do you prefer the scene, or a broad audience? Do you prefer smaller venues or the arena shows and festivals?

JL: There is good and bad things about both. It’s a whole different experience playing on a huge stage than it is being in a bar with kids right in your face. Both of them can be fun, but you adjust what you do a little bit. I don’t necessarily like one more than the other. I just enjoy playing. It doesn’t matter were it is. We put on the same show.

Type 3 Media: Did you enjoy the fight getting to the top of a mountain, or do you enjoy the view from the top now that you reached a summit with you career? What is your proudest achievement while in Dropkicks?

JL: It’s funny; we have been working steadily the entire time. People ask a lot like, “Did this make a big difference? Did the Red Sox make a difference?” It all looks the same when you get on stage everything. It doesn’t feel any different than it did ten years ago. We just keep on doing things the way we always have, and I don’t see anything changing.

Type 3 Media: I remember seeing The Dropkicks at my old union hall [I.B.E.W] for an acoustic performance on St. Patty’s days a few years ago. Has there been any discussion about going over to Wisconsin or Ohio on a day off to support the collective bargaining rights of the unions and perhaps break in the track “Take Em Down”?

JL: On this tour, we will be in Milwaukee for a few days.

Type 3 Media: Will you show up at the rallies?

JL: I’m not sure what we are going to have time to do. We did release one of the tracks on our album “Take Em Down” early, to show our support for the workers out there. So, we can at least help in spirit.

Type 3 Media: I missed the 2007 series between Boston and the Rockies. Do you know who took the title?

JL: (Laughs) You are from Massachusetts and missed the series?

Type 3 Media: No, no, I live in Colorado now, and I like to rub it in any chance I get! (laughs)

JL: I was actually out there for that game when they won.

Type 3 Media: How did the theme song “Tessie” (written for the Boston Red Sox 2004 Championship) come about? Did the Red Sox nation come to you guys?

JL: Dr. Charles Steinberg [former executive VP for public affairs for the Boston Red Sox] approached us about it. We did the song and brought it to the World Series.

Type 3 Media: Australian Football used “Shipping Up to Boston” as a theme. Did you ever expect that kind of success?

JL: We travel all over the world, and the band in universal. It’s pretty funny, even though we play Irish music at the end of the day, we have had kids all over the world, like in Japan, the kids tell us that you make us proud to be Japanese. It’s a universal thing, and it makes sense.

Type 3 Media: Any final thoughts?

JL: Our record comes out March 1st in the U.S., and we hope everyone enjoys it. We will keep coming back.

New Dropkick Murphys Album Due March 1st

Dropkick Murphys will release their seventh full-length studio album, Going Out In Style, March 1, 2011 on their own Born & Bred Records (ILG). Produced by Ted Hutt, Going Out In Style features the group’s signature blend of punk rock energy, folk soul, Irish spirit and American rock ‘n roll on tracks like “Memorial Day,” “Going Out In Style,” “The Hardest Mile,” “Cruel,” “Climbing A Chair To Bed,” and a rousing rendition of “Peg O’ My Heart” with guest vocals by Bruce Springsteen.

Fans will get a taste of the new music before it’s released when Dropkick Murphys–Ken Casey (lead vocals, bass guitar), Al Barr (lead vocals), Matt Kelly (drums, vocals), James Lynch (guitar, vocals), Tim Brennan (guitars, accordion, whistle, vocals), Jeff DaRosa (banjo, bouzouki, mandolin, harmonica, vocals) and Scruffy Wallace (bagpipes)–hit the road February 23 for their annual St. Patrick’s Day U.S. tour. The trek, featuring Against Me! as support on most dates, will wind up in Boston for the band’s run of St. Patty’s Day week hometown gigs. Also look for the Murphys to tour Europe in April and August, with additional U.S. dates planned for May and June.

The album’s title track is a rousing celebratory anthem complete with guest vocals by NOFX’s Fat Mike, The Living End’s Chris Cheney and Rescue Me mainstay, actor/comedian Lenny Clarke. “Going Out In Style” roars with a gang-style refrain and simultaneously heartfelt and hilarious lyrics. “We all have this romantic idea that our death will be like an international day of mourning, but that’s not going to happen,” chuckles Barr. “The song has two sides. There’s a serious side recounting this Larkin’s life, and then there are all of these fun parts about various women and characters.”

For Going Out In Style, Dropkick Murphys even enlisted the vocal talents of the legendary Bruce Springsteen–whom they first met at a DKM gig in New York and later collaborated with onstage at one of Springsteen’s Boston shows. Springsteen swaps verses with Casey for a spirited take on the old standard “Peg O’ My Heart.” “It has a classic old fifties rock and roll feel,” says Casey. “Both of my grandmothers are named Peg. One grandmother, Peg Casey, is always saying, ‘When are you going to do that song? Your grandfather always sang it to me!’ The time signature changed, so hopefully they still appreciate it when they hear it.”

On Going Out In Style, Dropkick Murphys throw a 45 minute, 49 second party to end all parties, all the while reveling in the Irish tradition of telling tales of triumph, tragedy and celebration through music. The band revives the art of the album as a cohesive whole on this raucous and rollicking romp overflowing with punk rock energy, folk soul, and rebellious spirit. Dropkick Murphys deliver one anthem after another. “Hang ‘Em High” ignites the album with a gang chant into a unforgettable bagpipe laden riff, driving guitars and big drums. Nodding to AC/DC while infusing flourishes of Celtic soul, “Hang ‘Em High” is the ultimate battle cry. Then there’s “Take ‘Em Down,” which continues to display the band’s social consciousness and their unwavering support for organized labor. On songs such as “Broken Hymns” and “Cruel” the band explores new territory, incorporating a myriad of sounds and textures with arena-ready drum beats, diverse instrumentation and epic refrains.
