• Evanescence Plays a Secret Show in New York

New York City. Looking at the crowd from the pit, it was clear that the excitement was building in anticipation of the show tonight. I too was excited to be present for this special “secret show,” and to be able to share the experience with the thousand Evanescence fans standing behind me.

After a brief intro, the band started playing “Going Under.” Sometimes, as a photographer, you concentrate so hard on getting the shot that everything else gets tuned out. This was not the case tonight. The band sounded tight and Amy Lee’s voice sounded stronger than ever. It gave me goosebumps. Her outfit was similar to what she’s worn in the past, but the colors were more vibrant. The stage lighting created a subtle fluorescent effect as she moved around the stage.

Finger Eleven’s James Black joined Evanescence onstage for this performance. He has a very strong stage presence and brings a lot of energy to the set. I’ve always enjoyed watching him play.  Tim McCord also seemed fired-up and moved around the stage more than usual.

There was a lot of interaction with the crowd during the show. A few songs into the set Terry Balsamo was having guitar problems and Lee entertained the crowd by joking with fans that they’re “crazy” for selling out this show in five minutes. During a quiet moment while the band was performing “Good Enough” someone called out from the crowd “Yes you are!” Lee glanced over and gave a slight smile.

This was my third time seeing Evanescence perform, and this show easily topped the others. Lee had joked that she was using the New York crowd as “guinea pigs,” because they needed a warm-up show before they played a large festival in Brazil. Evanescence played so well, and this was such an intimate event, that I can’t imagine the Brazil show could have been better.
