The charity auction, which will be managed by eBay, features items from some of the world’s biggest stars, including Coldplay, Norah Jones, Katy Perry, Gorillaz, Iron Maiden, Jane Birkin, the Beach Boys, David Guetta, Michael Franti, Lady Antebellum, The Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode, Celtic Woman, 30 Seconds To Mars, Rosanne Cash, Daft Punk, Herbert Grönemeyer, Angela Gheorghiu, Keith Urban, Good Charlotte, and The Beatles.

All funds raised will be used towards the Japanese Red Cross disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Funds will be used for the on-going provision of immediate relief to support the affected population during their recovery. EMI Group has committed to match all funds raised from the auction up to a maximum of one million euros.

The first phase of the charity auction starts today (April 5) and will run until April 15^th, with more than 200 exclusive money-can’t-buy items. A second phase of the auction will take place between April 11^th – 21^st. All the items can be viewed at ebay.com/EMIfamily4Japan.

Items included in the first phase of the auction include Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin’s jacket from the 2010 Viva La Vida world tour, Jane Birkin’s own Birkin handbag designed by Hermes, a pair of vintage speakers from Abbey Road’s famous Studio 3, five nights at Michael Franti’s yoga retreat in Bali, the Beastie Boys’ Japanese MTV award, and a signed limited edition lithographic Depeche Mode print.

The second phase of the charity auction will include a 1987 Ferrari 412 as featured in Daft Punk’s film ‘Electroma’, Katy Perry’s cupcake trampoline from her current California Dreams world tour, a limited edition Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine Schwinn bicycle, a signed guitar from Norah Jones, the MacBook used by David Guetta to create the demos for ‘One Love’, framed hand written lyrics from Brian Wilson, Tinie Tempah’s pink blazer from the ‘Frisky’ video, and a limited edition Gorillaz lithograph signed by Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn.

Multi-Grammy award winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones said: “Japan has been one of my favorite countries to visit and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this disaster. I’m so glad I can be part of this fundraising effort along with the EMI family.”

Brit Award winner Tinie Tempah commented: “I was shocked when I heard about the earthquake and the devastating effect that it has had on the Japanese people, and my thoughts are truly with them. I’m happy to be a part of this great fundraising effort alongside the EMI family. I really hope it helps make things a little bit easier at such a difficult time.”

The first meeting of these kindred spirits took place at The Allen Room at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center for two nights in 2007; their encore appearance was also staged at the heralded jazz house—this time for two sold-out nights at Rose Theater in February 2009 with special guest Norah Jones. Rather than rehash the previous material Nelson and Marsalis had first presented, the threesome paid homage to the music of the late Ray Charles, the iconic star of soul, r&b, country, jazz and pop.

On March 29, Blue Note will release the category-defying album from those shows, Here We Go Again: Celebrating the Genius of Ray Charles, a 12-tune song cycle about the ups and downs of love. It features tunes that Charles put on the musical map, including “Hallelujah I Love Her So,” “Cryin’ Time,” “Hit the Road Jack,” “Busted,” “Makin’ Whoopie” and arguably his greatest hit, “What’d I Say.” All the tunes feature new, original arrangements by Marsalis and artists within his Jazz at Lincoln Center circle. The songs are rendered in a variety of styles, including gospel two-beat, boogaloo, country ballad, bolero, hard bop, r&b, waltz and 4/4 swing. Instrumental support at the concert came via the trumpeter’s working quintet—tenor saxophonist Walter Blanding, pianist Dan Nimmer, bassist Carlos Henriquez and drummer Ali Jackson—and Nelson’s longtime sidekick, Mickey Raphael, on harmonica.

Marsalis arranged the set list as a story line about love: “You fall in love, you get lost and busted, and then you try to come back,” he says.

“It’s what I call root-groove music,” explains Marsalis. “The root music cuts across all the boundaries and genres in American music.” He adds, “There was a time in the early ‘50s when artists would come up and be influenced by all types of music.” Nelson agrees: “You have to love all kinds of music to put your own interpretation on [the songs].”

Nelson, who praises Charles’s classic country disc I Can’t Stop Loving You, says, “He did more for country music with that one album than any of us could have done because he opened country songs and country music to millions of his fans and brought a whole lot of people together.”

Jones was thrilled to be invited to share the stage. “It was a no-brainer for me,” she says. I love Willie so much and have had a musical relationship with him. And I’ve always wanted to do something with Wynton.” When she heard the theme of the evening was going to focus on Charles’ music, she got excited: “I know all those songs. We all just love his music. That’s the common factor.”

“This was a special event for me,” says Nelson. “It always is when we get together.”

…Featuring is an album of song collaborations featuring Norah Jones. The music exhibits a wide variety of styles ranging from jazz classics, to country, to indie rock, to hip-hop. The common thread throughout is Jones’ unwavering vocal presence. It serves as a good reminder of how much she’s accomplished and grown as an artist over the past eight years.

Highlights from this collection include “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” performed with Willie Nelson, “Here We Go Again,” performed with Ray Charles, and a version of the Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller song, “Love Me” (popularized by Elvis).  …Featuring is packed with other gems from start to finish.

The album does have a couple misses. The Foo Fighters song “Virginia Moon” is a nice Latin influenced piece, but Jones’ vocals are buried in the harmonies with singer Dave Grohl. Q-Tip’s “Life Is Better” and Talib Kweli’s “Soon the New Day” could really use more of Jones’ touch like what was done on OutKast’s “Take Off Your Cool.”

…Featuring is a great collection of songs.  At the very least it saves the hard-core Norah Jones fan from having to scour iTunes to purchase the tracks individually.  But it’s much more than that for those who want a collection of really good music performed by some phenomenal artists.

These collaborations reveal Jones’s astonishing musical versatility, from jazz to country, hip-hop to rock. Three of the songs on …Featuring originally appeared on records that won Grammy awards for Album of the Year (Ray Charles’ Genius Loves Company, Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters, and OutKast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below), and several others were also nominated for Grammys.

The album also includes recordings by some of Jones’s own bands and side projects (The Little Willies and El Madmo), and performances with artists that she’s toured with including M. Jones will also be premiering several remixes from The Fall this week. The three tracks will be featured on three different websites throughout the week. On December 1, RCRD LBL will present “That’s What I Said (The NYC Remix by Adrock and Mike D).” On December 2, Stereogum will present “Chasing Pirates (Santigold and Snotty Remix).” On December 3, Artist Direct will present “Chasing Pirates (Droogs Remix),” which was created by a remix collective that included Beck. The remixes will be released digitally and on vinyl on January 12, 2010.

“We decided to have people I admire do some remixes,” Jones recently told Entertainment Weekly. “[Adrock and Mike D of] Beasties Boys did one, and Beck, and Santigold.” Jones first collaborated with Beastie Boys during the 2008 presidential election when they recruited her for their Get Out The Vote concerts, which also included Santigold. Jones also appeared in the season finale of 30 Rock this past May along with Mike D and Adrock. Jones and Beck first met when they performed together on KCRW’s holiday concert in 2002.

The Fall finds Jones experimenting with a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris. King also helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer).

Review:
Norah Jones is back with her fourth studio release, The Fall. For this album, Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris. With the help of producer Jacquire King, The Fall marks a departure from the sound Jones has crafted to sell more than thirty million albums worldwide over the past several years.

Norah Jones’ band for this album includes drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). With this line-up it’s not surprising that this album is musically solid.

“Chasing Pirates” is an interesting choice for the album’s first single. Meant to showcase Jones’ new sound, the track has a late 70′s or early 80′s pop sensibility which reminds me of Paul McCartney’s work during that time. Its pop sound is also really unlike the other songs on the album.

“Even Though” has catchy bass line with a Bob Marley and the Wailers feel. “Light as a Feather,” with it’s droning guitar, has a haunting progression, and a timeless mellow rock sound. “You’ve Ruined Me” is reminiscent of older country or bluesy feel, while “Back to Manhattan” is plucky and more jazzy like Jones’ earlier work.

“It’s Gonna Be” is one of the more aggressive songs Jones’ has tackled. It features strong and somewhat raunchy keys, but remains grounded with her unwavering vocals laid over it. Where a typical rock band might let the music go over the top and out of control, Jones draws a line and lets the music convey power while exhibiting restraint.

The album’s only real detraction is the treatment of the vocal production in some spots. It sounds like they were going for a late 50′s early 60′s reverb-laden vocal style, but Jones has the type of voice that this production serves to detract from her voice instead of enhance it.

Norah Jones’ foray into some new musical direction is not a drastic one. Her approach to creating well thought out music remains, as well as her gorgeous singing voice. It’s nice to hear the new direction on The Fall, but make no mistake that this music instantly recognizable as Norah Jones.
