Push Play with Emily Osment
November 24, 2009
Club Hell
Providence, RI

A good sized crowd, and a lively mix of seven-year-olds to thirty-somethings, filled Club Hell for tonight’s event. The club’s stage is only about a foot higher than the main floor and there’s no barrier, so the crowd is able to get right up close to the artists. That would prove to be adventageous for the bands performing tonight.

Once Phil Bensen wrapped up his opening set, Emily Osment and her band took to the stage and the crowd started buzzing with excitement. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Osment’s performance, but after a few bars it became clear that she’s serious about her music and has the vocal and guitar playing talent to back it up. The fans in the crowd were completely sucked into the show and were energetically moving to the music. I had a hard time finding something solid to lean on in order to take a steady photo because the whole venue was shaking with fans moving to the beat.

Next up were headliners Push Play, and many of the girls in the crowd started screaming as they jumped onstage. Right away, many started singing along to the music from Push Play’s debut album Found. At nineteen-years-old, CJ Baran is already shaping up to be a formidable front-man who knows how to draw the crown into the music. He even pulled one lucky girl onstage to be serenaded.

Highlights of Push Play’s performance include a lively cover of the Beastie Boys’ classic “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!).” The crowd loved that one. Also at one point Osment’s drummer jumped up onstage to join the band for a song. He and Derek Ries played completely in sync and each had looks of excitement on their faces because they played so well together. It’s such a blast watching musicians having such a good time.

Another real treat for fans happened toward the end of Push Play’s set when Emily Osment joined the band onstage for a duet. Osment and Baran have a lot of onstage chemistry and sang very well together.

After the show all the bands moved to the back of the club to sign autographs. There were a lot of the people, but everyone patiently waited their turn as the bands happily interacted with each fan. Emily Osment and Push Play, both with only one release-worth of material, did a great job putting together what turned out to be a tremendous experience for fans. Great music, great times.

Type 3 Media: Your album Found has been out for a little over one month now, how has the response been so far?

CJ Baran: It’s been great. It was really cool to see it on the charts. We were blown away that we could get up to number eighteen. Now we’re pushing “Midnight Romeo”, and we’re really excited to be releasing our second single soon.

T3M: What will the second single be?

CJB: Right now it’s between “My Everything” and “Taking It Back,” but it’s looking like “My Everything” will be the second single.

T3M: How did “Midnight Romeo” do on the charts?

CJB: It got up to thirty-seven. We really want a top ten or top twenty hit. That’s what we’re going for now.

T3M: Emily Osment makes a cameo in the video, and will be joining you on tour. What was it like working with her?

CJB: She’s really cool. She’s also on Wind-up records, and that’s how we met. She’s a really cool girl, and really down to earth. We are the background band in her music video for “All the Way Up.” We filmed the videos on back-to-back days.

T3M: Have you had a chance to meet or work with any of your other label-mates?

CJB: We’ve met a bunch of them, but the only one we worked with has been Emily.

T3M: You list Muse and The Killers as influences, but I also hear others like Maroon 5.

CJB: “Taking It Back” is our song that kind of sounds like The Killers meets Maroon 5. “Watch It Burn” was heavily influenced by Muse.

T3M: You guys are only nineteen years old, but your songs sound like you’ve been making music for years. What do you think helps to give Push Play that ability?

CJB: We’ve been writing together for about four years now. We’ve also had the opportunity to write alongside some great writers who are older than us. We’ve learned from them. It’s cool to learn from all these different artists, and then make your own thing happen.

T3M: What was it like stepping into the studio to record Found?

CJB: We all took to it naturally. Our first demo that we put out was done in my basement on a laptop. It was a totally different experience to go from recording on a laptop to working with Matt Squire, as well as with Valentin (Fuhrer), and Curt Schneider.

T3M: How’s the tour going so far?

CJ Baran: It’s been crazy. Jesse James was supposed to tour with us but she dropped off, not sure what happened.

T3M: Is this the first national tour you’ve done?

CJB: This is like our third plugged-in national tour.

T3M: Do you have time for skateboarding while you’re on the road?

CJB: Oh yeah. Actually, we just skated for lunch.

T3M: Not worried that someone is going to break an arm?

CJB: No, we don’t do any crazy tricks. We just kinda skate to cruise.

T3M: Do you find it’s easy to bring what you’ve done in the studio to your live performance?

CJB: Yeah. Of course it’s going to be a little bit different, because we change it up. We run a lot of the synth and the strings behind us. We’ll throw the techno drum stuff in there too. Live is definitely more of a rock and roll experience than the album is.

T3M: What can someone who’s never seen you live expect to see?

CJB: Rock and roll show.

T3M: Any closing thoughts?

CJB: Check out our album on iTunes and in stores, and be sure to request “Midnight Romeo” on you local radio stations.

(NEW YORK, NY) – It was announced today by Wind-up Records President, Ed Vetri, that pop rock sensation Push Play has been officially signed to the Wind-up Records label. Wind-up Records will release and distribute Push Play’s first major album Found in late September 2009. Push Play’s first single off the new record, “Midnight Romeo”, will be released to national radio in late July 2009. Feedback from the new single has already generated enough heat within the music industry that a “Midnight Romeo” music video is already being filmed and will star Emily Osment who is currently starring in The Disney Channel’s overwhelmingly popular television show Hannah Montana.

Push Play has accrued a massive following and fan base since their inception just three years ago. They are the classic garage band story whose four members started playing music together after school and on weekends in their hometown of Long Island, New York. Without any professional backing, lead vocalist CJ Baran, guitarists Steve Scarola and Nick DeTurris and drummer Derek Ries booked gigs in high school gyms, local malls and even major concert venues throughout the United States and managed to land a coveted spot on the Bridge to the Future float at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade last November. Their online following is unstoppable; in fact Push Play’s MySpace page alone has generated close to six million plays and profile views. Push Play’s hilarious video clips are viewed by thousands regularly on their own YouTube channel and they are currently launching a ten webisode series based on their temporary move to Los Angeles for the summer which will air next month on pushplayrox.com. The well rounded group also has a commitment to charity that is unparalleled. Through their Push Play for Purpose campaign they donated over eighty performances to various charities including One is Greater than None, Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Autism Speaks, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and The Susan G. Komen Foundation, to name a few, raising over $100,000!

“We have been closely keeping our eyes and ears on Push Play over the last year. They have done a tremendous job developing a committed and energetic fan base, built a strong net presence and have made several high profile appearances,” said Wind-up Entertainment President, Ed Vetri.

“They have and continue to write and record great pop songs and have become proficient in the song writing process.” Ed Vetri went on to say, “By joining forces with Wind-up Records, Push Play will emerge as one of the year’s strongest breakthrough artists and we look forward to working with Push Play to bring their music to the masses and to being there to support these young great artists as they fulfill their dreams.”
