“Chicken-Cow-Cow.”  Not exactly the intro music one might expect for a rock star with the body of work Corey Taylor has amassed over the past 12+ years, but then, nothing about this appearance was entirely expected.

Taylor began the performance by setting some ground rules then reading excerpts from his book, Seven Deadly Sins.  He prefaced the reading by saying “This is #50 on the Christian reading list … that means two fucking things by the way, one, they’re buying it in bulk to burn, or two, I am warping the shit out of the Christian youth of today.”

Taylor also took some time to tell stories and answer questions from the audience.  Many of the stories, such as getting electrocuted by Daniel Tosh and the origins of “Chicken-Cow-Cow” contained a lot of humorous elements.  Other stories offered insight into Taylor’s life as a musician, like the creepy doctor’s office in Indianapolis that provided the best remedy for sore vocal chords and his remarks about what life is like now that he’s been sober for a year and a half; “When I thought I was singing great wasted, turns out I was not.”

For the second half of the appearance Taylor whipped out his acoustic guitar and played songs to the delight of the crowd.  The set included the Stone Sour favorites “Zzyzx Rd.” and “Through the Glass,” as well as songs from the Slipknot catalog like “Spit It Out,” “Psychosocial,” and “Snuff.”

Taylor also played a good number of cover tunes, including Elvis’ “Burning Love,” Alice In Chains’ “Down in a Hole,” U2′s “With Or Without You,” and the Ramones’ “Outsider.”  Despite being a bit under the weather, Taylor sounded great.  It was impressive to hear how he made the songs his own by playing them his way and not trying to over-emulate the bands.

The set closed with a rowdy rendition of “X-M@$,” the anti-holiday track Taylor released last year.  It’s no wonder why he makes such a great front-man, because whether he’s singing, speaking,  and playing guitar (or even cheap Casio keyboards), Corey Taylor is lively, animated, and engaging.  He doesn’t have to work to connect to the crowd; he just does it instinctively.

Taylor’s closing remark from the Q&A session sums up this evening pretty well, “As long as your passionate about something, fucking do it.  You don’t have to define your life by it, but at least try for it.”

So what’s the real story behind one of the rock genre’s most revered frontmen and a Christmas single?

Taylor explained that “I wrote this song in my kitchen one winter, listening to people bitch about the holidays.  Personally, I love the holidays, but they seem to bring on severe stress in most people.  So, I wrote this in honor of crotchety, drunken bastards who don’t know the difference between a yuletide and a tool shed.  Plus, I think it’s funny.”

Last month, when a gap arose during the recent Stone Sour UK tour, Taylor hot-footed to Metropolis Studios in London, and tracked the tune in a single afternoon.  The lyrics showcase the singer’s sense of humor and irreverence in full force, dispensing a fat dose of jocular stick-poking at those who loathe the holiday season.

However, Taylor’s joviality doesn’t stop with the song words, as he even drops a sneaky ‘Hi Simon!!’ in the single’s fade-out, as a nod to Mr. Cowell and his Xmas-hijacking X-Factor squad in the UK.

You’ll be able to pick up the digital single from all leading digital retailers on December 14. Taylor is donating proceeds from the song’s sales to Teenage Cancer Trust.

It was indeed a year of “firsts” for a band that was a decade-deep into their hard rock superstardom and dominance.Their latest album, 2008’s All Hope is Gone, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 charts –the first time in their history. Slipknot embarked on a two-year touring trek that was globally successful, playing to packed houses across continents, including their headlining stint at New York City’s legendary Madison Square Garden, which was stacked to the rafters and chronicled by Rolling Stone.

It makes perfect sense that the band, known for their eclectic DVD collection, ranging from multi-camera angle concert documents to arthouse-style films, would release (sic)nesses, which captures a special performance at Download. All Slipknot shows are memorable, but this one is particularly memorable, as the band blasted through hits from all of their Platinum albums. On stage is Slipknot in its most natural state and (sic)nesses will put you in the front row.

30 cameras were on hand to capture every possible angle of the band as they motored through their parade of hits; the cameras also caught the fans on tape, as they are just as crucial an element of a Slipknot show as the band members themselves.
Perhaps most importantly, (sic)nesses is one of the final major performances for founding member Paul Gray, who tragically passed away in May 2010. While initially unintended, the concert is a testament to the legacy of Gray, where fans can enjoy a lasting glimpse of the bassist doing what he loved most.

Additionally, the DVD also includes a 45-minute behind the scenes documentary created by band percussionist Clown, as well as all four music videos from the All Hope Is Gone cycle.

Lastly, All Hope is Gone has gained Platinum status, capping off a passionate, turbulent and ultimately unforgettable album cycle.

When the time came to create a visual for “Snuff”, once again the band did the unexpected.  The band is set to unveil a short film, co-directed by Slipknot’s own M. Shawn Crahan and renowned photographer/director P.R. Brown, to accompany the track. The film features frontman Corey Taylor as never seen before, interwoven in an intricate storyline. Taking the viewer on an emotional roller coaster ride, the piece is likely to generate more questions than answers.

“‘Snuff’ as a piece of art is a testament to the evolution of Slipknot,” says Crahan. It’s taken 10 years of uncompromising vision to finally be able to present portions of the bigger picture. Stay awake, because as always, it’s still continuing.”

“Snuff” will be premiered on Friday, December 18^th at 12:09 PM EST/9:09 AM PST via partner AOL.  AOL will showcase the film on its following properties:  AOL Music Homepage (up to 30.2 million UV’s per month), Spinner, hard rock news channel Noisecreep,  Spinner Canada, Spinner UK, AOL Music Artist Page, AOL Radio Guide , AOL Radio Blog.  In addition, “Snuff” will be co-promoted by AOL, Slipknot and Roadrunner on their music video hub, social networks and via viral outreach.  AOL Music is currently the No. 1 music site on the Web.  “Snuff” will be available on Monday, Dec. 21^st on Slipknot1.com and Roadrunnerrecords.com.

Slipknot fans are anything but apathetic.  Tickets for the Lowell, Massachusetts stop on the All Hope Is Gone world tour sold out, so the band and venue opened up more seats on the side of the stage.  The kids sitting behind me during the show waited in line for four and a half hours in the freezing cold to make sure they had prime spots on the floor for this general admission event.  The crowd was crazy… it was awesome.

Trivium started the night off with a lively set.  Many of the concert-goers on the floor were crowd surfing and moshing so hard during their performance that they resigned themselves to the stadium seats for the rest of the show.

When I first heard that Coheed and Cambria would be touring with Slipknot, my first reaction was “that’s an odd mix.”  My preconceptions were quickly erased as soon as they took the stage.  I’ve been following this band for a few years now and have seen various live and DVD performances.  Their performance tonight was one of their best.  They came right out of the chute and blew everyone away.

Coheed and Cambria really seized this opportunity to show not only how talented they are, but just how powerful their music can be.  They put together a super-strong set, and reaction of the crowd was overwhelming.  Unfortunately those sitting on the side of the stage were forced to watch the show through three lighting towers, each nearly fifteen feet high.

“Slipknot, Slipknot, Slipknot…” the crowd chanted while the road crew scurried around onstage to get things ready for the night’s main event.  Slipknot filed onto the stage and each member greeted the crowd during the lengthy intro.  Then the chaos began and bodies started to fly.

Slipknot’s stadium performance is a bit different than when I saw them in an amphitheater during the Mayhem festival.  This time, there were thousands of fans crammed on the floor of the area, all literally consumed by the music.  Mosh pits, crowd surfers, head banging… the crowd was so lively that the air became thick with sweat and breath.  It was so dense and hot that I could barely see the other side of the arena.

All the energy the band was feeding to the crowd was coming right back to them ten-fold.  While amphitheater shows are cool, this band was made for the type of energy that an arena crowd brings.  Slipknot’s performance was as lively and loud as ever.  They kicked ass.  With nine guys moving around onstage, there’s always something different to see during each show.  There just no way to see every detail as it it’s happening.

It’s no surprise to see why this show sold-out, and it’s clear why Slipknot has become one of the best, and biggest rock bands in the world.  I can’t wait to see them again the next time they roll through the area… I just don’t want to clean-up the carnage they leave in their wake.
